Beware of online dating scams

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) published a new article warning users about online dating scams.

The FTC said they receive thousands of reports each year where scammers are setting up fake online relationships with sole purpose to steal their victims’ money.

“Word to the wise: sometimes it’s best to lead with your head and not your heart,” said the FTC. Nearly $220 million was lost in 2016 and reports to the FBI have tripled in the past year.

Some signs of an online scam include: professes love quickly, claims of being from the U.S., but happens to be overseas for business/military, asks for money while luring you off the dating website, and claims to need money for emergencies (such as medical or travel).

Users are encouraged to slow down and never wire or send money to an online interest.

Check with your bank if you think you have been scammed. Report any scam experience to your online dating website, the FTC and the FBI.
